Dribble Handoffs: Mid-December Edition

College basketball is almost a third of the way done for some teams. That’s sad, and a little scary, but it also means that there is tons of news available. Here are some recent highlights local teams.

At 7-4 Manhattan is the new hot topic on the block. Emmy Andujar’s impressive performance in the Battle of the Bronx, plus his 10-point game against Hofstra earned him MAAC Freshman of the Week honors. CBS Sports also jumped on the bandwagon with an article about Steve Masiello this morning. The Jaspers have quite a while to enjoy it all, since they don’t play again until Dec. 20 at Towson.

The hot team used to be Iona, and while the Gaels are still looking really good at 7-2, they’ve got another tough test on Wednesday. If you want to get caught up on their opponent, the Richmond Spiders, you should check out The Spider Bandwagon. I found that site thanks to the super helpful compendium of 80 College Basketball Twitter Accounts to follow by Chris Burrows over at Run the Floor. (And I’m not saying that just because I’m fifth on the list.) This game is important for Iona, because CollegeHoops.net currently says the Gaels would be out of the NCAA tournament if they didn’t win the MAAC title.

And of course there is a lot of great stuff being written about college basketball in general. Rob Dauster of Ballin’ Is A Habit writes a provocative post about whether players should be allowed to major in Football or Basketball. It’s a nice companion to Kevin Duffy’s piece about graduation rates at UConn. Finally, check out this map of the all the college basketball teams in Division I that the author of The Bracket Board did with his four-year-old son. I think it’s cute that his son wonders why there isn’t a team in Alaska.
